10th Annual Memorial Day Service and Parade

Mountainside Memorial Day 2022

The Mountainside community gathered for the 10th annual Memorial Day ceremony and parade on Monday, May 30th, 2022. After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the community came out in force to honor and remember those who died in our nation’s service.

The annual memorial ceremony was at the veterans flagpole monument on Constitution Plaza. Veterans, scouts, Rotarians, as well as police, fire, and rescue squad members then paraded to Deerfield School.

97-year-old Mountainside resident and veteran Cyril John Massar served as the Grand Marshal of the annual parade. Cyril was born in Tresckow, Pennsylvania and has been a Mountainside resident since 1991. He entered Federal Service on January 26th, 1943.

Serving as this year’s Grand Marshal was an honor for Cyril, who was joined by his family for the ceremony. Using his platform, Cyril spoke directly to the children in attendance; encouraging them to reach out to the families of fallen soldiers, and to live a life of service.

Cyril left the crowd that day with one important question, “Are you proud to be an American?”
