Who doesn’t love getting mail?

Keeping connections during Flexible Instruction Days can come in many forms. Mount Horeb paraprofessional Helen Moore initiated a creative way for students in grade 2 to learn about the United States of America with a special postcard project.

A postcard from one of the 50 states with three interesting facts and a colorful illustration was mailed to each student, their teachers, and Principal Scott Cook. Educators Kathleen Haydu, Stacey Lederman-Kroll, and Lindsay Rosenberg designed a unique social studies lesson to pair with the postcards.

“The students were so excited as they anxiously waited for their postcards, checking their mailboxes each day,” according to Haydu.

Once the postcards from each appointed state arrived, the research and reporting began. The assignment required each recipient to uncover two additional fun facts about their state and record a video to the joint-class FlipGrid, an online platform for sharing short videos.

Some interesting facts shared with their classmates were: Alabama was once the Sock Capital of the World; the ice cream cone was invented in New York; and Kentucky was the home of Abraham Lincoln.

“All of the students kept their state a secret until they posted their Flipgrid. Then the teachers and students listened to all of the presentations while learning some super cool facts! Students are now asking their parents to visit places they never would have thought of before! A fun, interactive, distance-learning experience for all,” stated Lederman-Kroll.
