HOW TO SHOP LOCAL . . . THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY WAY

Gail Alterman, Costume Curator at the Cranford Historical Society, will present a program entitled “How to Shop Local . . . The Early 20th Century Way” on Wednesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cranford Community Center. The Community Center is located at 220 Walnut Avenue.
Ms. Alterman will focus on the way people shopped – locally – one hundred years ago. What stores and products were available in Cranford and the surrounding area? Where did people shop? Using ads from the Cranford Chronicle and other archival sources, Ms. Alterman will show how people shopped and what they bought in an age when shopping was done locally and when a trip to a large department store was an excursion. Ms. Alterman has a Master’s Degree in Costume History and Design from New York University in conjunction with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has been a consultant for various historical societies regarding the care and storage of costume and textile collections.
The program is sponsored by the Cranford Historical Society and the Cranford Public Library. Admission is free and all are welcome.
