8th Annual Young Entrepreneur Challenge Fostering the Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow
On Tuesday, May 21, 2019 the Union Township Public Schools held its 8th Annual Young Entrepreneur Challenge. Each year, the 4th grade Gifted and Talented students at each elementary school in Union compete in this district wide championship modeled after the show Shark Tank.
Students begin with an idea for a product or business. These young minds then create a business pitch for “investors” which includes finances, print advertisement, public speaking, and a commercial all created by the students. Each school begins with a minimum of two teams who compete against each other in the classroom to see who will move on to the district wide competition. The winning teams must then create a table display for their product, or business, in order to wow the judges.
This year, these fourth grade students presented their commercial and product pitch to four judges including UTPS Personnel Manager, Akua Boakye, Mayor Delisfort, and two members from the Bed, Bath, and Beyond Corporate Center.
“It was a really close competition,” said Craig Wojcik, supervisor of the Gifted & Talented Program/Assistant Director of IT. “Only a few points separated the second and third place teams.”
