Union HS Sophomore Designs Special Socks for Charity

Submitted by Jennifer Williams

“Sock Problems” is an organization that uses socks to partner with charities and raise awareness. They have recently created special designs to raise awareness for Autism, Cancer, Climate Change, and most recently Gun Violence. The company sent out a nationwide call for designs, and Union High School (UHS) History Teacher Nicholas Ferroni brought the idea to one of his students. Out of hundreds of designs were submitted and UHS sophomore Paulina Markowski was selected.

Paulina shared, “With the encourage and reassurance I received from the people around me, I managed to create something I would never have expected to create; taken from the positive perspective as an artist. As a person, I still believe that the smallest of things mean the most, and if my artwork is looked upon and said to be worth of representation for an event that took place across our nation, then that is far beyond my own imagination. This stands as a tribute to the victims of school shootings, and to the friends and families who are grieving over loved ones no longer with us, watching from above. Our purpose as students was to become visible, and continue to be, as it is our generation’s hands that now gently hold the future. I am thankful to have been given this opportunity, and I hope that this also holds just as much meaning to those supporting this awareness, and to those who are still in the process of healing.”
