Don Sweeney Receives National Community Service Award

Submitted by Mary Leonard, DAR Chapter Chair

The Daughters of the American Revolution, Cranes Ford Chapter, was honored to present Don Sweeney with the National Society’s Community Service Award on November 13th.

In Cranford Memorial Park stands a granite monument with the names of 86 hometown heroes who answered a call to duty and make the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. Don Sweeney, who created the Cranford 86 Project in cooperation with the Cranford Historical Society and other members of the Memorial Day Committee, has made sure these fallen veterans are being publicly honored and remembered.

This award epitomizes Don Sweeney, as he has made a contribution to the community of Cranford in an outstanding manner by organizing Cranford 86 Project. These fallen heroes have been remembered in print and on the street poles in downtown Cranford.

Lisaann Permunian, NJDAR State Chair Community Service, stated in her letter to the chapter “Mr. Sweeney truly embodies the spirit of this award. Words like outstanding, dedicated and passionate comes to mind in reading of his selfless devotion to community and devotion to veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the United States involvement in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War.”
