Kumpf Middle School Students Research COVID-19

Students in both Mrs. Daneille Bihuniak and Ms. Annemarie Lamberti’s seventh grade science classes at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School participated in a project-based learning assignment in connection to COVID-19. Students were asked to create a News Segment/PSA (Public Service Announcement) video about the current COVID-19 Pandemic and its impact on their community.
Students were asked to research COVID-19 using a variety of sources. They were given a research outline and rubric to use as a guide while completing the project. Questions to be covered included: What is a pandemic? What are the symptoms of COVID-19? What are some things you can do to reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19? What 3 things do you personally do to stay healthy and happy while under the “stay at home order”?
Videos included either images and text with voice over narration or actual video footage of themselves reporting. Students were also allowed to interview family members.
Bihuniak stated, “I am so proud of the work my students have put into these projects. Students did an excellent job of covering the spread of COVID-19 and the precautionary actions that are advised for all of us to stay healthy. As is often the case, younger generations tend to have a unique perspective on world events. It is evident from these videos that students are definitely missing their traditional classes and friends but are truly enjoying the increased amount of family time the stay at home order has created.”
