Children and Teen programs

Read, Play, Learn!

Thursday, February 1, 8, 22, & 29 @ 10:00 am – 10:30 am

Tuesday, February 6, 20, & 27 @ 11:00 am – 11:30 am

Read, play, and learn with us! This program is an interactive experience for toddlers aged 18 to 35 months and their caregivers. Development and literacy is encouraged through reading, singing, and playing. Join the fun as we enjoy classic picture books, learn songs and rhymes, and explore play and movement activities.

Sensory Storytime

Thursday, February 1, 8, 22, & 29 @ 11:00 am – 11:30 am

This sensory-friendly program is an inclusive storytime for children 1 to 5 years with sensory challenges such as difficulty sitting still, being in large groups, and those on the autism spectrum.  Using movement activities, books and play, this interactive storytime encourages literacy and social opportunities for all.

Proctored ACT Practice Exam

Saturday, February 3 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Prepare for the ACT by taking this free proctored practice exam, offered by Above the Grade!

Please note: Students should bring #2 pencils, erasers, and a test-approved calculator. They may also bring a snack and drink to consume during the break.

Saturday Storytime

Saturday, February 3, 10, 17, & 24 @ 10:00 am – 10:30 am

The entire family is welcome to join us for this storytime each Saturday! Children and their caregivers can increase language development and comprehension with our stories, songs, and rhymes.

Adventurers Wanted: Dungeons & Dragons Club!

Monday, February 5 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Run by teens • No experience needed • Snacks will be provided

Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game where players use characters to play and embark upon imaginary adventures. The Dungeon Master or DM serves as the game’s storyteller, organizing the game, voicing unique NPC’s (non player characters) and managing epic encounters where players will learn to think creatively to handle different situations. The D&D Club is a great place to socialize in person with no computers or electronics needed!

Little Listeners

Tuesday, February 6, 7, 20, 21, 27, & 28 @ 10:00 am – 10:30 am

Delight and stimulate your baby’s senses with short books, music, and movement activities. This baby program, which is designed for children from birth to 23 months and their caregivers, encourages early language development in a fun and engaging environment.

Preschool Play

Tuesday, February 6, 20 & 27 @ 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Our interactive storytime program will help your 3 to 5 year old child get ready for kindergarten while having fun. First we’ll share some stories, songs, and activities together. Then, we welcome you to stay, play, and enjoy the library’s toys and exploration stations.

Terrific Twos

Wednesday, February 7 @ 11:00 am – 11:30 am

Travel the path to literacy at our fun and engaging program designed just for two-year-olds. Caregivers will interact with their children through books, music, and movement activities while exploring letters, sounds, and counting!

Let’s Create Studio

Wednesday, February 7 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Students in 3rd to 7th grade are invited to participate in this monthly hands-on creativity workshop. Each month will feature a new challenge or project.

This month’s activity is to make duct tape roses.

Kids Create (K-2) – Snack Edition

Thursday, February 8, 13 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Students in grades K-2nd are invited to make yummy chocolate covered pretzels!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Friday, February 9 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

The Children’s Department invites children of all ages to participate in our annual Stuffed Animal Sleep Over! Participating children will create matching lockets – one for themselves and one for their stuffed pal, fill out a permission slip, and participate in our special storytime before going home and leaving their stuffy to enjoy a busy night of activities at the library!

Children can join in the fun by watching what sort of mischief their pals get into throughout the evening by looking at our Facebook page.

Can’t make our event at 4:00 pm? Children can drop off their pals anytime before 5:00 pm on the 9th. Stuffed animals can be picked up at anytime during normal business hours after the 9th.

Books and Snacks | Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Books and Snacks is SPPL’s middle school book club! The club is founded and run by members of our Teen Advisory Board.

Pajama Storytime

Monday, February 12 @ 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Childrenare invited to join us for a fun and exciting nighttime storytime! Grab your favorite stuffed animal and wear your pajamas for a fun evening of stories and songs. This program is geared for children ages 1 to 3 but all are welcome! ASL interpretation will be provided.

Books and Beyond

Wednesday, February 14 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Books are only the beginning! Students in Kindergarten to 2nd grade are invited to this program which will feature a non-fiction book and then continue to a hands-on related activity.

This month we will be learning about the moon and creating their own moon phases craft.

Family LEGO Club

Saturday, February 24 @ 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Open to the entire family, this LEGO club encourages children and their grown ups to work together in order to design and build unique creations in the Children’s Room of the library.

The library will supply the blocks, you supply the imagination!

Adult Programs

Fridays at 10am – Balance Awareness with Yasmin Ofek, a gentle but effective approach to moving confidently throughout the lifespan. Registration is required for this virtual class.

Friday, February 2, 10am to Noon – Hypertension Clinic in the Adult Room with a public health nurse from Union County. Walk-ins welcome.

Monday, February 5 at 10am – Bring Your Own Book, an informal discussion of what participants have recently read and enjoyed. Registration is required.

Wednesdays at Noon – We’ll show Wednesday Movies in our downstairs meeting room.

Thursday, February 8 at 7pm – SPFHS teacher Zach Rittner will share information about theGreat Backyard Bird Count, including helpful apps and strategies for participating in this fun citizen science project. Registration is recommended.

Saturday, February 10 at 2pm – Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta will walk us down memory lane in an interactive discussion about products that have become obsolete in Going, Going, Gone. Registration is recommended.

Monday, February 12 at 7pm – The Friends of the Library membership meeting will be followed by a Book Swap. Members are encouraged to bring a book or two to swap.

Tuesday, February 13 at 10am – Drawing with Sandra Cerchio. Registration is required.

Tuesday, February 13 at 1pm – Drop In Crafting – bring your work-in-progress and craft with company. Learn about our community project to make hats for the Overlook Cancer Center.

Thursday, February 15 at 7pm – Evening Book Club will discuss Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

Saturday, February 17 at 2pm – Enjoy a concert with musical collective Amani, featuring the music of Harry Belafonte. Registration is required.

Monday, February 19 – Library Closed

Tuesday, February 20 at 1pm – Afternoon Book Club will discuss Still Life by Sarah Winman.

Thursday, February 22 at 7pm – Friends of the Library Trivia Night – Help Friends support the Library at this fundraiser. Admission is $5 per person. RSVP at spplfriends1@gmail.com.
