Samuel Shafran Past President of Chamber of Commerce

Samuel (Sam) Shafran, 78, of Scotch Plains, N.J., died on May 17, 2017, of cancer. Sam was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School. He was a wonderful storyteller and was always prepared to tell a joke. Throughout his life, Sam enjoyed many entrepreneurial endeavors in the areas of real estate, textiles, and trucking. He cherished time with family and friends.
Rahway resident and past president of the Rahway Chamber of Commerce Bob Markey had this to say “Sam Shafran was a great friend to Rahway. He was generous member of the business community who gave freely of his time and expertise to help others. He served as the president of the Chamber of Commerce and was involved with other community service projects. He was a friend that can be counted on. Sam was always quick with a joke and can command an audience with an anecdote on any topic of conversation. When playing on the tennis court or when just holding court, Sam was a joy to be with.”
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Harriet Scherer-Shafran; his sons, Andrew and Michael; his daughter-in-law; and his three grandchildren, Jonah, Lucas, and Annie; his brother, Joe Shafran, and sister, Marilyn Todd. He also leaves behind many close friends and family members that were all very dear to him. For those wishing to honor his memory, donations can be made to In-Patient Palliative Care c/o the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center, 475 South St., Morristown, N.J. 07960, or online at www.f4mmc.org.
