Rahway Dance Theatre student wins NAACP Gold Medal

On July 19-20, Morgan Wade of Rahway Dance Theatre(RDT) competed in the national NAACP ACT SO competition in Las Vegas representing New Jersey in the Dance category. Morgan Wade won the 2014 NAACP New Jersey ACT-SO Gold Medal for her dance performance and a Gold Medal in Dramatics at the local competition in April. In 2013, Morgan also won a bronze medal in the NAACP New Jersey ACT SO Dance category. Morgan, age 17, is a student at Rahway Dance Theatre under the direction of Ms. Jay Skeete-Lee. She is a honor student in her senior year at Franklin Regional High School. Dancing since the age of 3, Morgan has been a student at RDT since 2012.

ACT-SO, a program by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), is an acronym that stands for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. It is a student enrichment program that culminates in a local and national competition where students compete for awards and prizes totaling over $50,000. Students who participate in ACT-SO, compete with other students (locally) in up to 3 of 26 categories which includes sciences, humanities, performing arts, visual arts and business. The local competition serves to showcase the hard work students have put in all year long. Students receive medals and prizes provided by the local and regional sponsors and contributors. ACT-SO Students who receive gold medals on the local level then compete at the National Competition where they receive prizes and other rewards provided by national sponsors. The New Jersey Olympics was initiated in 1989.

Rahway Dance Theatre (RDT) is located at 1439 Irving Street, Rahway, NJ directly across from the train station. Rahway Dance Theatre’s mission is to introduce and to educate the local communities, about the value of dance in everyday life. Rahway Dance Theatre has other of ACT SO Gold medal winners including Brittany Descobeth in 2012 and Daphne Lee in 2009.

RDT has classes for everyone from 3 yrs. to 93 yrs. Students at Rahway Dance Theatre will learn a variety of dance forms e.g. Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Pointe, Hip-Hop, Modern, Afro-Modern and Pas De Deux.
