April 1 – Blackout Poetry Kit Pickup Begins (Adults & Teens)
Celebrate National Poetry Month by picking up a “blackout poetry” kit. Create a blackout poem, creating “erasure” poetry by censoring all but a few words and phrases on a page taken from a damaged book. You will need to supply your own pen, Sharpie or black paint. If you wish to make your blackout poem a work of art, you will need paint or colored pencils. Available while supplies last.
April 2 at 3 PM – Poetry Reading & Open Mic (Adults & Teens)
Celebrate National Poetry Month with this poetry reading by the poet Mary Gilliland, author of the poetry collection “The Devil’s Fools” and members of Who Who Write, followed by an open mic. April 21, 28 @ 3:15-4:15PM – Math Club (Teens)
Join the NP Math Club and hone your problem-solving skills while meeting with other math enthusiasts. Meetings are held every Friday at the NP Library from 3:45-4:45PM. Join us for bagels & a book group with no assigned reading! Come and tell us about what you’ve been reading and which books you’ve enjoyed recently. Learn to play chess from the NP Chess Club! Weekly play every Monday night from 5:30-7:30 in the Coddington Room. Instructional Lectures & Strategy on Apr 3 and 17 from 4:30-5:30 in the Conti Room. Open to kids, teens and adults. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Register at least 1 day in advance online at npchessclub.org.

Join our weekly creative writing group, a fun, nonjudgmental way of expressing yourself! Write about anything you’d like – no experience necessary. Phyllis Kalb ran the South Orange Public Library’s creative writing group for over 15 years and will supply writing prompts and encouragement. Please bring a pen and paper. Teens in 6-12 grades, bring some friends and come play some board games at the library! No registration, drop in anytime.
April 10 @ 7 PM – 9 PM – Batter Up – Let’s Talk Baseball (All Ages)
Baseball enthusiasts are invited to discuss teams, players and issues of the sport with other baseball fans. Now in its ninth year, this group of mostly seniors welcomes all ages to join the discussion. Email the library at rsvp@newprovidencelibrary.org to register.
April 11 @ 1 PM – 3:30 PM – Monthly Movie “The Fabelmans” (Adults)
“The Fabelmans” (rated PG-13) will be screened in the Conti Room. Part memoir, part ode to the power of the movies, The Fabelmans finds Steven Spielberg digging at the family roots that helped make him a beloved filmmaker. Armed with a camera, young Sammy Fabelman starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother. Free, everyone is welcome. April 13 @ 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Book Group (Adults)
The book group will discuss “The Barbizon: the Hotel that Set Women Free” by Paulina Bren, the story of New York’s most glamorous women-only hotel, welcoming everyone from aspiring actresses, dancers, and fashion models to seamstresses, secretaries, and nurses. April 15, 29 @ 10 AM – 4 PM CRAFTERDAY (Children)
Come by the Coddington Room and use the materials and instructions that have been left out on the tables. Take home what you create. While supplies last! This program is made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.
April 18 @ 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM – Book Lovers Circle (Adults)
Reader’s advisor and librarian Susan Lipstein will preview ten books to put on your to-be-read list. Participants will then take turns sharing about a book they have enjoyed reading. The library’s morning book club will attend this program made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library, in lieu of their usual book discussion.
April 18 @ 6:35 PM – 8:05 PM Read to a Dog (1st – 4th Graders)
Are you a new or developing reader? Practice your skills by reading to a therapy dog. To register your 15 minute slot, please email NPMLChildrens@gmail.com.
April 19 @ 7 PM – 8 PM – A Parent’s Guide on How to Pay for College (Parents & Teens)
Learn about various financial aid options and some of the biggest college planning mistakes families should avoid. This MCPT Webinar will also reveal unique techniques to reduce the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) with the new FAFSA rules that can save thousands on college costs. April 22 @ 10 AM – NP Green Fest for Earth Day (All Ages)
Join the NP library, NP Rec Dept and lots of other local organizations at Centennial Park for the 2nd annual Green Fest!! It’s a celebration of sustainable efforts by local groups for Earth Day. What could be more sustainable than your local library? Start new habits of borrowing instead of buying. Stop by our table to get a library card if you don’t have one yet (bring proof of NP residency). Also check out the library’s AfterWords Bookstore in the library basement for amazing deals on gently used books to give great reads another life!
April 23 @ 3 PM – Concord Singers in Concert (All Ages)
The Concord Singers celebrate spring in this concert that is part of the annual concert series organized by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library. Founded in 1977, Concord Singers is a women’s community chorus based in Summit, which provides a friendly musical home to both novice and experienced singers. Their repertoire is varied and includes secular and sacred music from composers ranging from the classical to modern. Free, everyone is welcome.
April 25 @ 1 PM – Cookbook Club (Adults)
This month’s theme is Mother’s Day Brunch recipes and fruit recipes. Bring a cookbook or a recipe that you like to share with the group, or even cook and bring the dish itself if you’re feeling inspired! To join, stop by the reference desk or email RSVP@newprovidencelibrary.org.

Find the past in the present with Joel Farkas, former docent at the Ford Mansion at Washington’s Headquarters. You are in for a riveting hour online with New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger! Join us from the comfort of your home as he discusses his newest book in the Cork O’Connor series Fox Creek and his other works. Cork O’Connor, the former sheriff of Tamarack County, Minnesota and a man of mixed heritage—part Irish and part Ojibwe. His work has received a number of awards.
