Register for Library programs by visiting millburnlibrary.org/events. Registrants will receive a Zoom link for online and hybrid programs. All in person programs will take place at the Library building at 200 Glen Ave. Programs are free and open to all residents.

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2023 “ALL TOGETHER NOW”:

KIDS Ages 0-11 – Log books and earn prizes as you go. There will be books, brag tags and more!

TEENS Ages 12-17 – Read to Win! Every week you get a chance to win a gift card to a local spot in town OR a prize basket. The more you read, the better your chances. Reviews earn you extra raffle tickets (yes, please!) Tickets can be used in any of the weekly raffles. 

ADULTS Ages 18 and up – Summer reading is not just for kids! Join our annual challenge and earn tickets to enter fantastic prize raffles, plus a bonus gift just for signing up. The more you read, the better your chances of winning.

SMART MEDICARE: 3 STEPS TO GETTING IT RIGHT, Thurs., June 8, 7-8pm, Online

Register now to build your Medicare IQ and confidence. You’ll learn when to enroll in or replace your plan, what are the parts and plans of Medicare, and how to find the right coverage at the lowest price. BREATH FROM FRANCE: VIOLIN & PIANO DUO, Sat., June 3, 3-4:30pm, Auditorium

Is classical music difficult, snobby and boring…? Not at all! It was very popular and the composers and performers were like pop stars at that time. Maki Yoneta and Claire Haidara will present French composers in this friendly & chatty concert! 

JOURNEY TO FREEDOM WITH SANKOFA STORIES, Thurs., June 22, 7-8pm, Auditorium

“Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”  – Fannie Lou Hamer

For over 250 years, Black people were enslaved in the United States, until they were declared legally free by the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. The news of their freedom did not reach the enslaved in Texas until June 19, 1865. This day, known as “Juneteenth,” celebrates the end of slavery throughout the United States. Join Sankofa Stories on this storytelling journey from the agony of slavery to the joy of emancipation in celebration of Juneteenth.

ELTON JOHN: YOUR SONGS, Thurs., June 29, 7-8pm, Auditorium

Elton John in collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin has written approximately 500 songs and sold more than 300 million records making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.  We will travel with Elton from his early days in London as a songwriter and session man through his international fame as a solo performer. Presented for Pride Month.

Join us in celebrating the publication of Last Call at Coogan’s: The Life and Death of a Neighborhood Bar by Millburn librarian Jon Michaud. Jon will be in conversation with author Corey Mead followed by an audience Q&A. Books will be available for purchase.

RELAXED SEASONAL DINING WITH THE TASTY RADISH, Thurs., July 6, 7-8pm, Online

Sophisticated snacks, delicious bites, and beautiful boards filled with seasonal treats form the basis for the apéro dînatoire, an elegant cross between a light dinner and a casual cocktail gathering.  Learn how to adapt this relaxed style of dining at home using delicious ingredients, simple recipes, and an elegantly casual atmosphere.

Socially, we have the hammer of justice, the bell of freedom, the song we all sing; spiritually we can exercise forgiveness, scatter seeds of kindness, and follow the path of love.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NYC HIGH LINE WITH MARIO MEDICI, Thurs., July 20, 7-8pm, Online

The High Line is only 1.45 miles long but it’s packed with history old and new. Take a walk on The High Line with Mario Medici, amateur photographer and historian, and discover how the High Line was transformed from a historic elevated freight rail to one of New York City’s most popular parks. Check out the new architecture, gigantic skyscrapers built over train tracks, century-old ice buildings, shopping centers, new sculpture art, and, yes, even where the Oreo cookie was discovered!

A BRIEF CULTURAL HISTORY OF COMIC BOOK SUPERHEROES WITH ALEXANDER CLEMENTE, Thurs., August 3, 7-8pm, Hybrid, Auditorium

Superman, Batman, and Spiderman are known to people all throughout the globe. Of course, these heroes, as well as Wonder Woman, Captain America, and the Incredible Hulk, all sprung from American popular culture. These heroes changed over the decades and yet are still loved by many. In this lecture, we will look at how such heroes came about and why we like them so much. 

MEDIUMSHIP DEMONSTRATION WITH ROSEMARIE RUBINETTI CAPPIELLO, Tues.,August 8, 6:30-8pm

RoseMarie Rubinetti Cappiello, gifted medium and healer, will discuss what mediumship is: how it works and who experiences it. She will teach us about signs and dream visits from loved ones. She will be making some Spirit connections for those in attendance.

BEACHSCAPE PAINTING, Weds., August 9, 3-5pm, Room B

Join Express Yourself Studio for an acrylic painting workshop. Owner Simone Anthony-Brown will teach participants tips and techniques for painting a vibrantly textured, beachscape painting. No experience required – you will be guided through the process. The main objective is to de-stress, have fun and be creative. Space is limited. Registration is required.

WRITE WITH PRIDE! PRESENTED BY WRITERS CIRCLE, Sat., June 24 11am-12pm, Williamsburg Room

During this workshop, participants will engage in interactive creative writing exercises and prompts in a positive, supportive atmosphere. Although not all participants are guaranteed a chance to share their work during the program, everyone will write, engage, and have fun. Registration required.

Get service hours for doing what you love: reading! Go to millburnlibrary.org/teens to see examples and access the Google form.

Overview:

1) There is a limit of 2 review submissions per month.

2) Books must be on the student’s reading level, preferably from the Library’s Middle Grade or Young Adult collections.

3) Every 100 pages = 1 volunteer hour + 1 hour for writing the review itself

Join Pamela Nixon for a playful yoga storytime for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers! The books she reads come to life as we slither like snakes, hop like frogs and bark like dogs. Through songs and stories we’ll bend, stretch, breathe and move while having fun learning yoga poses. Registration required.

Family Program

Let’s kick off the library’s summer reading theme “All Together Now” by thinking about kindness towards animals with Zoophoria, NJ! In this all-ages family event, we will meet some incredible animals from all over the world. Professional handlers will give children the opportunity to safely touch the reptiles while learning about the challenges they face in their natural habitats. We can work together to make a difference for these creatures through small daily actions, even though they live miles away! Registration required.
