Franklin Elementary School in Rahway transformed its school into a global village for its recent Holidays Around the World Family Literacy Night. The event, spearheaded by the school’s librarian/media specialist, Mrs. Rebecca Rose-Wood, was a resounding success, bringing together students, families, and staff for an evening of literacy, culture, and fun.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and the positive feedback we’ve received from our families,” said Principal Dr. Patrick Holness. “This event was a true celebration of literacy and the diverse cultures that make our school community so vibrant.”

Upon arrival, families were greeted by a festive atmosphere, with colorful decorations and the aroma of hot cocoa wafting through the air. Students and their parents eagerly browsed the Scholastic Book Fair, selecting books to expand their home libraries. Meanwhile, the Holiday Bookmark Creation station was abuzz with creativity as families designed their own personalized bookmarks.

The heart of the event was the Holidays Around the World Story Room, where families gathered to listen to enchanting tales from around the globe. Storytellers captivated their audience with tales of Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, and other winter holidays, fostering a sense of wonder and appreciation for different traditions.

To add a touch of excitement, the event featured a Holiday Kahoot game, where families tested their knowledge of holiday trivia. Laughter and cheers filled the room as teams competed to answer questions about festive traditions, music, and foods.

Throughout the evening, families enjoyed hot cocoa and light refreshments, fueling their energy for the festivities. The atmosphere was one of joy, camaraderie, and a shared love of reading.

“We are so grateful to Mrs. Rose-Wood for her dedication and creativity in organizing this event,” said Dr. Holness. “She truly captured the spirit of the holidays and brought our school community together.”

“It was a ‘lit’ night indeed!” added Mrs. Rose-Wood, beaming with pride. “We are committed to fostering a love of reading and cultural understanding in our students, and this event was a perfect example of that.”

Franklin Elementary School recognizes the importance of family involvement in education and is committed to providing opportunities for families to engage in meaningful learning experiences together. The Holidays Around the World Family Literacy Night was a shining example of this commitment, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.
