Girl Scout Food Drive Is A Success

More than five carloads of non-perishable food and $228.78 was collected at an April 1 North Plainfield Girl Scout, Stop & Shop, Watchung, N.J., food drive. The food items benefited the North Plainfield branch of the Somerset County Food Bank and the local FISH, Inc., Food Bank Program. Monetary donations are ear marked for FISH.
The food banks are appreciative of the girls’ hard work. “I have never seen a donation so large. What a wonderful success!,” said Jessica Pratt food bank volunteer. Janice Allen, FISH treasurer said, “The girls did an awesome job. The money will be used for those in need of perishable items. We are very grateful for the donations.”
For more than six hours, six troops worked in shifts to receive the food items and monetary donations from patrons of Stop & Shop. Along the way, the donated items and money was transported to Holy Cross Church, North Plainfield, where members of a seventh troop sorted and packed the items in shifts for seven hours and counted the money donations. The food donations were transferred to the food bank and food program the same weekend.
“The food drive was fun and great for the community, too,” said Madison Kasper, Troop 65255 cadet.
The leaders are proud of the girls who dedicated their time. “We are happy our girls support such a terrific cause,” co-leader and project coordinator Nancy Pierro said.
