Annual Florham Park Junior Police Academy a Success

Florham Park Junior Police Academy Class of 2023

The 2023 Florham Park Junior Police Academy was held from June 26th through June 30th, and was a huge success. The Junior Academy was open to students entering 6th grade in addition to students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade.

The academy returned after a 3-year hiatus due to the covid-19 pandemic. After a week of events, training, and drills, the class concluded with the graduates marching in the 4th of July Parade. 

The schedule of events was:

Day #1

  • Introduction to military drill
  • Physical training
  • Defensive tactics

Day #2

  • A fun PT circuit introducing the cadets to functional movements applicable to law enforcement duties
  • Some friendly competition between Alpha Platoon and Bravo Platoon completing various team building exercises
  • Drilled defensive tactics

Day #3

  • Cadets did morning PT and got to observe a firearms demonstration
  • Morris County Sheriff’s Office bomb robot and bomb squad presentation
  • Some tactical movements and hand cuffing bad guys
  • CPR crash course from EMT and former Junior Police Academy Cadet, Ben Cave

Day #4

  • Cadets learned what a Tabata is
  • Stop The Bleed came by to give a life saving and valuable lesson on bleeding control and trauma first aid.
  • The cadets got a full run down of a Florham Park Police patrol vehicle and all the equipment and gear inside.
  • Timed obstacle course competitions and mock motor vehicle stops and arrests!
  • The famous Hummer pull. A testament to their teamwork and unity as a class.
  • We closed out the day reciting our Core Values

Day #5

  • Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, Inc. hosted an informative and fun presentation.
  • The NJ State Police landed their helicopter and told us all about their jobs and responsibilities.
  • A mock emergency vehicle operations course
  • Using “drunk goggles” to see what operating a vehicle while impaired is like and how dangerous it is.
  • Lastly, we had our class graduation.

Several cadets earned awards, recognizing their hard work and leadership. Every cadet earned their Junior Police Academy certificate and we celebrated with a well earned pizza party. The Florham Park Police Department thanked the class of 2023 as well as: the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Police, Florham Park Memorial First Aid Squad, Florham Park P.B.A. Local 78, Florham Park Board of Education, the Brooklake School Custodians, Stop The Bleed, and the Brooklake Country Club for their help in making the Junior Academy successful. A special thanks to our assistants Sofia, Mia, Julia and Ben who went above and beyond for the success of this year’s class.
