Community donates 300 Backpacks

For the fifteenth consecutive year, Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence organized the collection of new backpacks and school supplies to be shared with area children.

Don Treich, coordinator of this ministry for Faith, hoped to top last year’s number of 200. Through the generosity of members and friends in our local community, a grand total of 300 backpacks were collected and distributed. Each bag was stuffed by Faith volunteers with construction paper, a spiral bound notebook, a composition book, a ruler, glue stick, eraser, crayons, kid scissors, a toothbrush and toothpaste, pencils, pens, and pencil sharpener, as well as a colorful note wishing all a good year ahead.

During worship on August 27th,Pastor Jane McCready led the congregation in a special blessing of the backpacks before they made their way to their new homes just in time for the start of the new school year. Area organizations that received backpacks were St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark; St. Stephan’s Grace Community in Newark; St. Vincent DePaul Society Food Pantry in North Plainfield; students in Bound Book schools; and Second Street Youth Center in Plainfield.

Many thanks to all who donated time, supplies and funds to this ministry.
