Submitted by Mary Leonard

The Crane’s Ford chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are privileged to present the National DAR Conservation Medal Award to Dr. Thomas M. Ombrello, Senior Professor of Biology at Union County College on Saturday, April 14, 2018, 1 p.m. at Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Avenue, Cranford, New Jersey.
This prestigious NSDAR Conservation Medal Award can be presented to any man or woman with a distinguished conservation record. Criteria for the award include: distinguished teaching; outstanding volunteer record in educational work including college level; major replanting efforts by an individual; resource management; all of which pertain to Dr. Ombrello’s Historic Tree Project nursery.
We invite the public to join us in honoring Dr. Ombrello for his extensive work in the Historic Tree Project at Union County College campus in Cranford. In addition, his dedication to the conservation of trees has connected him locally with the historic 300-year-old Basking Ridge Oak by cultivating and providing a progeny from his college nursery to succeed the parent tree in Basking Ridge at the Presbyterian Church.
Crane’s Ford Conservation chairman Barbara Krause, indicated, “We cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award than Dr. Ombrello. Please be with us to celebrate Dr. Ombrello on his receiving this national award.” Dr. Ombrello will also give a presentation on his interests in historic trees which will be timely, considering our massive loss of trees in the recent storms. We are extending April’s “National Arbor Day” to “Arbor Month.”
