Clark Public Library October 2020 Events

Our doors have opened! Reduced hours are in effect, so please check our website or call before coming. The capacity will be reduced and we will be practicing social distancing. Masks will be required when in the building. We are still offering curbside pickup while open for in person visits. Our librarians are here to help with reference questions or book recommendations. We are open from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We will stay open until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Hours are subject to change.

The book drop is now open! All items returned will be in quarantine for 7-10 days. The items stay on your card during this time, but you will not be charged overdues for the time the items are quarantining.

The library will be closed on Monday, October 12 for Columbus Day.

Most events will be held virtually at this time via Zoom. Please register for any programs by emailing reference@clarklibrary.organd state which program you would like to attend and you will be sent a link to the meeting. You may also register through the online calendar on our website clarklibrary.org.

8 Minute Lego Challenges

Thursday, October 1 at 4:00 p.m.

Join us via Zoom to express your creativity with our Timed Lego Building Challenge. Kids will get a prompt, such as a “piece of furniture” and then have 8 minutes to build it with Lego. There will be an hour filled with different prompts! If you do not have your own Lego, please contact the Children’s Department of the library.

Preschool Story & Craft

Fridays, October 2-30 at 10:00 a.m.

Stories, rhymes, songs, and simple craft on Zoom. Please register to be sent a materials list in advance of the program. If you need some of the materials contact us at least a day in advance to get them through curbside pickup. Please register to get the Zoom link.

[Adult/Teen] Halloween T-Shirts with Cricut Design

Monday, October 5 at 6:00 p.m.

We will be designing Halloween T-shirts on Cricut Design Space app. A variety of Halloween images and letters will be shown on the app. You will pick some of them as your own design and iron them on later. The library only provides the Cricut Iron-On vinyl. Please prepare your own T-shirts to apply them. You may come in or make an appointment for curbside pickup of your materials after the class. Baby Bookworms

Tuesdays, October 6-27 at 10:00 a.m.

Baby Bookworms is back virtually via Zoom! Babies and toddlers are invited to hear some books, and learn some songs, rhymes, lap bounces, and fingerplays! Please register to get the Zoom link to attend.

Pick Up & Zoom

Tuesdays, October 6 and October 20 at 4:00 p.m.

Every other week we will have a new craft project. You can pick up the materials for the craft starting the Wednesday before and then join us via Zoom to make it together! Please register to be contacted for a pick up time and for the Zoom login information. This month we will be making monsters and other Halloween crafts.

Pajama Time

Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Join us in your pjs for an evening storytime session for the family on Zoom. Please register to get the Zoom link.

Pumpkin Story & Painting for Kids

Wednesday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m.

Join us via Zoom to hear a pumpkin story and share ideas while putting together and painting a wooden pumpkin craft. Supplies and paint will be provided to registrants beginning the week before the program. You will need to supply your own paintbrush.

Family Game Night

Thursday, October 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Join us on Zoom for a monthly family game! This month we will play the family favorite-BINGO. Please register to get the Zoom link and the link for your BINGO cards.

Virtual Author Visit with Aunt Katie

Friday, October 16 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for an interactive Zoom presentation with children’s book author Kathryn Leslie! We will hear a live reading of her children’s picture book: “Gracie: A bilingual adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains.” She will also talk about why she chose to make her book bilingual, give us a behind-the-scenes look at the original storyboard, and give us a sneak peak of her next book. For children ages pre-k through 7th grade. A link to a downloadable 18-page activity sheet will also be provided. Please register for the links.

[Adult Craft] Cactus Painting

Wednesday, October 21 at 11:00 a.m.

Join us for a Pick Up and Zoom craft class for adults. We will paint cactus on canvas. After registering, you will be emailed to pick up the materials a few days before the class and be sent the Zoom link to make it together. A canvas and acrylic paints are provided but paint brushes are not provided. Registration is limited.

Halloween: A Haunted History with Kevin Woyce

Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m.

Why do we carve pumpkins at Halloween, dress up in costumes, or decorate our homes with skeletons and ghosts? Join Kevin Woyce as he traces the strange history of Halloween, from Old World harvest festivals to our modern family holiday. Along the way, he’ll discuss the origins of the Jack-o’lantern, Orson Welles’ 1938 “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, and much more at this program via Zoom. Please register for the link.

Teen Take & Make: Halloween Book Pumpkins

Monday, October 26 at 4:00 p.m.

Join us as we make paper pumpkins from recycled books. Once you register, you’ll be emailed when your supplies are ready to be picked up at the library. We’ll then create the pumpkins together over Zoom. Open to teens in Grades 6-12.

Telescope Night with Pearl Observatory

Monday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m.

See mountains, valleys, and craters of our moon. View the clouds and moons of Jupiter. See Saturn and its rings and other wonders of our universe with Pearl Observatory! For ages 5 and up. Rain/cloud reschedule date is Thursday, October 29. Registration is required and limited to 25 people. Masks are required and social distancing will be in effect during this outdoor program. Program will be held outside, behind the library. Please park in front of the police station and walk to the back of the library on the sidewalk. The library will be closed at this time with no restrooms available for use.

Halloween Trivia Night

Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Think you know all there is to know about this spooky holiday? Test your knowledge at our trivia night. Open to ages 12 and up. Register for the Zoom link.

Virtual Browsing: New Adult Non-Fiction

Wednesday, October 28 at 11:00 a.m.

Join us via Zoom to see what new and interesting non-fiction books are available at the library for adults. You may reserve some books you are interested in while we are having the Zoom meeting. First Chapter Frenzy for Elementary Students

Most weekdays we post a video of a reading of the first chapter of a book for elementary students in our Facebook Children’s Group. These will highlight new books or other good books you may have missed. If you like the first chapter, place a hold to read the rest of the book!

Read to Sophie by Appointment

Sophie the therapy dog is available to listen to your child practice reading via Zoom! She has very flexible availability. Please email ReadToSophie@gmail.com to make an appointment.
