Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad Gets Surprise Visit

By Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad were on their way back from a call in Morristown when the volunteers heard on the police radio that “people were waiting for them.”
“You never know if it’s inspection,” said Chief Ori Sternberg. “We have plenty of that on a daily basis.”
When the Squad arrived at their facility on 378 Snyder Avenue, Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, the saw a school bus in their parking lot. Sternberg said they thought someone got hurt on the school bus, perhaps a school trip gone wrong with sick and/or injured kids. As kids were getting out of the bus, Sternberg and the crew were unsure as to what was going on.
But to their surprise, it was a teacher and seventh and eighth graders from Columbia Middle School, Berkeley Heights. They wanted to thank and recognize the Squad for all they do for the town. They brought the Squad treats and handwritten letters of support.
“We took the kids in and told them what we are doing. We talked about our operation and activities,” said Sternberg, adding, “Of course we put some seeds in their heads for volunteering in the future.”
The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad has been serving the community since 1942. They are always seeking volunteers. Visit the squad at: bhvrs.org/ or call 908-464-1141.
