“Hug in a Mug” Campaign

Westfield Girl Scouts

Senior and Ambassador Scouts from Service Unit #52 successfully hosted the fourth annual Westfield Girl Scouts “Hug in a Mug” campaign. To connect with local seniors and individuals who may be homebound, these high school students collected mugs and filled them with coffee, hot chocolate, breakfast items, and sweets. 240 mugs were distributed to area residents through partnerships with Lifelong Westfield, First United Methodist Church, St. Helen’s Church, Holy Trinity Church, and Sunrise Living.

This project was undertaken in honor of the late William Kessinger. Mr. Kessinger, a paratrooper during the Korean War, was a grandfather figure to many in the Westfield/Scotch Plains area. Nicknamed the “Candyman”, he was famous for giving out sweets to local children. Each mug is assembled with several of his favorite treats.

This campaign, the largest to date, was made possible through the wonderful generosity of the Westfield community. Westfield Girl Scouts wishes to thank the many troops, local donors, and the Westfield Memorial Library for supporting this effort.
