It was an exciting summer of chess at the Westfield Chess Club which meets at the YMCA, but nothing could beat the atmosphere on Sunday, July 9th when the club hosted the youngest grandmaster in history, Abhi Mishra, who learned how to play at the Westfield Chess Club. Abhi became the youngest player ever to qualify for the grandmaster title on June 30, 2021, at the age of 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days.

Returning to the scene of so many of his triumphs Mishra, now one of the top 20 players in the United States, took on 29 players and won 28 of the games. His only loss was to 13-year-old Elizabeth Tsugel of Brooklyn, NY.

Two weeks after visiting the club, Mishra and fellow Westfield Chess Club alumni Brandon Jacobson of Westfield finished in the top two places at the US Junior championship held in St. Louis, MO.
