The Linden Retired Men’s Club Changes Name to The Linden Senior Men and Women’s Club

By Steve Zielinski, President

The club was organized on February 3, 1959 as “The Linden Retired Men’s Club” and will celebrate their 60th anniversary February 2019. In 2009 they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a buffet luncheon, live band, dancing, and a power point presentation of the club’s history titled “The First 50 Years.” Plans are now under way for the 60th anniversary celebration with a power point presentation titled “The Next 50 Years.”
For the past 40 years, membership in the club has been both men and women, so it was finally decided to change the name to agree with the current type of membership.
The new name of the club is “The Linden Senior Men and Women’s Club.” The membership is now open to all senior citizens of Linden, not just retired men. The purpose of this club is to promote and stimulate new interests to foster a larger measure of activity and friendship among retired men and women, as well as to promote the welfare of senior citizen’s. They have speakers on various subjects that are of interest to seniors. They show videos and slide presentations of past parties and functions.
There are also many celebrations and parties throughout the year including, St. Patrick’s Day, a June Summer Party with a different theme each year, Halloween with most attendees wearing costumes, and Christmas with children from Linden School #8 leading attendees in the Salute to the Flag and entertaining them with Christmas carols. There is a DJ or Band at all parties.
Other events include dinner shows at various venues and fill a 56-passenger coach each time. Members look forward to getting together and enjoying the activities the club offers. Coffee, tea, and pastries are served at the end of all meetings. It’s a great time for socializing.
The club is sponsored and supported by the City of Linden, Department of Public Property and Community Services. Meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons at 1 p.m. at the JTG Recreation Center, 330 Helen Street in Linden, New Jersey. There are no meetings during the months of July and August.
Anyone interested in the club can come as a guest before becoming a member. Don’t sit home. Come on down and join the fun. For more information call Steve Zielinski, President, at 908-501-0265 or email szman22@comcast.net.
