THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS

The League of Women Voters of Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit is hosting a program dealing with criminal justice reform. The program entitled “Mass Incarceration in New Jersey” will be held on Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30pm at the De Corso Community Center, 15 E. 4th Street in New Providence. Light refreshments will be served.
Alexander Shalom, a senior staff attorney at the ACLU-NJ will explain how we arrived at a point that the incarceration rate in New Jersey is higher than that in countries like China and Russia. He will also present what we can do about it.
Mr. Shalom, a New Jersey native, litigates cases on issues that disproportionately impact people of color. He appears in courts throughout the state seeking to ensure more accountable police practices, criminal justice and juvenile justice systems that are more just, better conditions for those in prisons, expanded voting rights, fairer treatment for immigrants and more equitable access to education.
The ACLU is the leading organization dedicated to defending and extending civil liberties for all people in this country. The league of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization which encourages informed and active participation in government. Both groups advocate and lobby on major public policy issues. For more information, call 908-898-0565
