The College Woman’s Club of Westfield awarded close to $50,000 in Scholarships at its 101th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Echo Lake Country Club. The awards were made to five young women from Westfield to help them pursue their college education. The recipients were selected based on academic achievement, community service, and financial need.
A scholarship in memory of civic leader and long time College Woman’s Club Board member and Trustee Betty List was awarded for the first time and presented by her children Robert List and Karen List. A Scholarship in memory of Katharine Jaruzelski was presented by Jenny Jaruzelski, both past presidents of the Club. The Gaile Boothe Scholarship, The Marge McCornack Scholarship, and the Past Presidents Scholarship, presented by past president Carol Mucci, were awarded along with the College Woman’s Club of Westfield Scholarships. According to Scholarship Chairperson, Annmarie Puleio, “We award these Scholarships in the spirit of our Founders Mabel Sturgis, Wellesley, 1902 and Helen Welch, Vassar, 1914 and thanks to the enduring commitment and abiding generosity of our members to further the education of women.”
Stephanie Hoodja received The Marge McCornack and the College Woman’s Club Scholarships totaling $13,000. Ms Hoodja will attend Rutgers University to study Marketing.
Isabel Lee was awarded The Betty List Scholarship for her commitment to civic improvement and the College Woman’s Club Scholarship. Her awards total $13,000. Ms Lee plans to pursue a career in civil engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Her primary interest is in bridge construction and repair.
Catherine Moore received the $5,000 Katharine Jaruzelski Scholarship. She will pursue her interest in Music Production and Composition as a Music Education, Piano Major at the University of Michigan.
Catherine Posyton received both the Past Presidents Scholarship and a College Woman’s Club Scholarship totaling $13,000. She is interested in a career in Public Relations and Marketing and will study these majors at Rutgers University.
Julia Varicella-Stokes was awarded the $5,000 Gaile K. Boothe Scholarship to study Nursing at Villanova University. She plans to become a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics.
The College Woman’s Club of Westfield is proud to acknowledge this outstanding group of young women. Applications for the scholarship are available through local high school guidance departments in February of each year and are evaluated by a committee of CWC members each spring. Funds for the scholarships come from nominal membership dues, donations, interest on investments and legacies from our members.
