Back to School—for Adults—at the Summit Free Public Library

School bells are ringing—for adults this September at the Summit Free Public Library as the library rolls out a robust series of lectures and activities!  Are you interested in politics? Do you like crafting?  Has decluttering your home been on your ‘to-do’ list since . . . forever? Then read on!

(above) Krista Valenzuela, Sr. Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst, presents on The History of Nation-State Hacking on Sept. 17.

Those who would like to learn more about the threat of nation-state hacking are invited to join us on Tuesday, September 17 from 7-8:30 p.m., as the library welcomes Krista Valenzuela, a Senior Cyber Threat Intelligence Analyst at the NJ Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell, for a presentation on The History of Nation-State Hacking. Valenzuela will provide an overview of historical incidents involving cyberattacks or cyber-espionage conducted by or on-behalf of foreign nations, including Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. She will outline the current assessment of threats posed by nation-state adversaries and the different motivations and tactics employed by these actors. Valenzuela’s lecture will be followed by a question and answer period.

Want to do a deeper dive into Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics? Join our Great Decisions 2019 discussion on this subject on Wednesday, September 18 from 12-2 p.m. Cyber conflict is a new and continually developing threat that includes industrial sabotage, attacks on infrastructure, as well as election interference. Dealing with these 21st century warfare threats are perhaps one of the biggest challenges facing US national policy.Participants are asked to prepare for the class by reading the course materials in advance (the materials are available at the library’s Information Desk). The class opens with a 30 minute video, produced by the Foreign Policy Association, which gives an overview of the topic. The discussion will be moderated by Lisa Allen of HomeTowne TV.

Feeling crafty? Then come join us for our Make Your Own: Autumn Wreath craft class! No sewing skills needed! Can you tie a knot? You’re in! We’ll be making beautiful autumn wreaths using pieces of fabric and our imaginations! The class is on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. We provide all the materials—you provide the creativity!

Feeling overwhelmed with STUFF? Looking to downsize, right-size, or just normalize? Come to the library on Tuesday, September 24 from 7-8 p.m. and learn How to Break-up with Your Clutter! Jamie Novak, an Organizing Humorist™ and bestselling author of Keep This Toss ThatUnclutter Your Life to Save Time, Money, Space, and Sanity, provides a humorous look at the process of decluttering, offering helpful tips and insight on what to keep and what to toss. If stuff is toppling out of your closets or paperwork covers your tabletop, then run don’t walk to this de-cluttering comedy show! Learn what to do with all the stuff you’re saving because it’s still good and you think you’ll use one day or wear again.

Seating is limited, so registration is required for all of these lectures and activities. To reserve a spot visit the Event Calendar tab on the library’s website at summitlibrary.org or call the library at 908-273-0350, option 3.
