Summit Begins New Food Waste Composting Program

New Composting Program

The City of Summit is started a six-month pilot program for household food waste composting at the Municipal Transfer Station on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Residents with a disposal permit will now be able to bring food scraps and other items to the Transfer Station. The new composting area will be in a separate location adjacent to the current composting area for leaves, grass clippings, and garden trimmings on the lower level of the Transfer Station. The new program will accept items such as fruits and vegetables, cooked or baked food, eggshells, coffee grounds, and more.

The program will run on a trial basis for six months, after which time Division of Public Works staff will evaluate the program to decide whether to make it permanent. For more information, please visit www.cityofsummit.org/composting or contact the Division of Public Works at 908-273-6404.
