Rahway boarded a Spirit Cruise Ship in June for the experience of a lifetime! Students learned about the history and significance of over 15 historic landmarks through a guided tour. They were asked to imagine what it was like to travel long distances by water through a historical perspective (pilgrims, slaves, immigrants, etc.). They observed marine/river life, discussed environmental factors and the human impact on this beautiful waterway. They were also treated to a social/musical experience, as the trip provided a dance party/luncheon with a DJ for their entertainment. Every child returned with new memories, increased friendship and an historical perspective on New Jersey and New York’s shared heritage.
The field trip was made possible by a grant from the Field Trip New Jersey Fund, a new fund and pilot program designed to support opportunities for students in underserved communities to experience field trips. Field Trip New Jersey is hosted by the Community Foundation of New Jersey, which partnered with the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to launch the fund. Additional support was provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the New Jersey Historical Commission.
