Recycling milestone

St. Theresa School is proud to announce its participation in the PepsiCo Recycling program. Laudato Si’ is the encyclical letter by Pope Francis regarding environmentalism, ethics, and the Catholic faith. In his letter, he calls for everyone to care for our home, the Earth. There are seven key points of the letter, which are as follows: the Cry of the Earth, the Cry of the Poor, Ecological Economics, Simple Lifestyles, Ecological Education, Ecological Spirituality, and both Community Involvement and Participation. By signing up for this program, students have accepted Pope Francis’ challenge to care for creation.

So far, students at STS have recycled as much as a manatee weighs! That is a little over 1,000 pounds. STS has saved enough energy to power an electric car for an entire year, that is 2,881 kilowatts. By recycling, the students have saved enough paper to avoid converting three oak trees into paper. Lastly, through the students’ recycling efforts, they have avoided Greenhouse Gas Emissions. It would take an entire year for one acre of evergreen trees in forestland to offset the amount of greenhouse gasses avoided by the students’ recycling.

Students in grades third to eighth grade may join Sr. Rachel Lauritsen, FMA, and Mrs. Crystal R. Kacerek, MSES, MA, as moderators. The Laudato Si’ club is excited to see what new recycling milestones they will be able to reach through the PepsiCo Recycling program. Besides recycling, the club looks forward to gardening in the spring and pursuing other activities to embrace Laudato Si’s goals.
