St. Michael School Aids Refugees

The philosophy of Saint Michael School in Cranford is to promote the spiritual, academic, and personal formation of the student. The challenge of the St. Michael student is to live these teachings beyond the doors of the school into the local and world community. When the war in Ukraine began, the school community immediately put the school’s philosophy into action.

The school reached out to St. Vladimir Ukranian Church in Elizabeth. The Church, who has direct contacts in Poland and the Ukraine, provided a list of the most needed items for the millions of refugees. These items ranged from baby care items to a variety of first aid and medical supplies.

The students, families and faculty of Saint Michael School readily embraced the opportunity to help those in need. Within five days, they collected:

  • 3,372 diapers & pull-ups
  • 12,520 baby wipes
  • 57 tubes of diaper rash ointment
  • 32 containers of baby powder
  • 5,349 disinfecting wipes
  • 695 hand wipes
  • 737 gauze pads & rolls
  • 6,202 band aids
  • 63 rolls of medical tape
  • 1,524 disposable gloves
  • 74 tubes of triple antibiotic ointment
  • 40 elastic bandage wraps
  • 8,485 alcohol wipes

In addition to cases of isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, a variety of other health and beauty care items were donated. A student volunteer “counted” the items, as they thought it would help the students understand the extent and impact of their donations.

Student volunteers assisted in delivering three carloads of donations directly to St. Vladimir’s in Elizabeth. Where they were greeted and personally thanked by Rev. Ruslan Romanyuk, Pastor. Parish volunteers will sort and pack the items that will be sent directly to those in need.

Mrs. Sandy Miragliotta, Principal of Saint Michael School, noted that Saint Michael is not only the patron saint of our school but also the patron saint of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. As the students continue their daily prayers to Saint Michael, they will also continue to pray for those in the Ukraine.

Saint Michael School is located at 100 Alden Street in Cranford. For additional information about the school, please visit smscranford.com, call (908) 276-9425 or e-mail: saint.michael@verizon.net.
