Somerset County Library System of New Jersey Named Four-Star Library by the Library Journal Index

Submitted by Tracy Carney

For the sixth consecutive year, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) was named a four-star Library by Library Journal Index of Public Library Service.

“This national ranking reinforces the Somerset County Library System’s reputation for excellence,” said Freeholder Brian G. Gallagher, library commission liaison. “Our staff at all of the County branches are some of the best in the industry, and this recognizes that our Library, and our County, are constantly striving to excel in community facilities and service for our Somerset County residents. Congratulations to the administration and staff on another four-star honor!”

Out of the 250-plus libraries in the state, only six, including SCLSNJ, received star ratings. The other five New Jersey Star Libraries are Avalon Public Library, Bernardsville Public Library, Mercer County Library, Ocean City Public Library, and Princeton Public Library.

“America loves its public libraries and Library Journal’s Star Library Ratings highlight highlights the very best of them,” said Brian Auger, SCLSNJ’s county library administrator. “Of the 7,000-plus libraries studied, 257 made the list this year. This is an ongoing testament to our outstanding staff and to the support we receive from users and the Freeholders.”

The Library Journal Index is a measurement tool that compares United States public libraries with their spending peers based on five per capita output measures: circulation, library visits, program attendance, circulation of electronic materials, and public Internet computer use.

“I cannot begin to share what an honor it is for SCLSNJ to receive a four-star rating from the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service,” said Christopher Korenowsky, SCLSNJ director of public service. “Every single day, our talented staff works across 10 buildings and 15 towns to provide exemplary customer service to all library users. Through our dynamic programs for all ages, to our work with local educators, to our community outreach efforts, SCLSNJ continues to position itself as a profession-leading organization across the region. This is a recognition we are delighted to receive as we continue to explore new ways to shape our Library spaces, welcome new residents, and address the needs of shifting demographics.”
