Soehl Middle School Horror Literature in Tents

For a unit on reading the horror genre, Soehl Middle School teacher Jan Macha has pitched a tent in his classroom, dimmed the classroom lights, and turned on night sounds to immerse his students in the feeling of the horror stories. The students read horror stories in the darkened tent in their classroom on October 4.

“The purpose of the tent, dimmed lights, and night sounds is to create an atmosphere of fear. This marking period is focused on horror narrative, so I wanted to create an environment in which students can get in that atmosphere via their senses, not just through text,” said teacher Jan Macha.

“Students love it. Most of them have never been in a tent. Others dig in the horror genre with a new fresh look as the fear is not only on the page of their book but all around them.”
