Savor the Poetry of Food at the Watchung branch

From Pablo Neruda’s “Ode to the Onion,” to Sylvia Plath’s “Blackberries,” food is a common inspiration for poets. Discover the connection between food and poetry through prompts, tastings, and discussions on June 6 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s (SCLSNJ) Watchung Library branch, located at 12 Stirling Road in Watchung, New Jersey.
Poet and educator Vanessa Young will help attendees create their own original works inspired by their taste buds during the program, the Poetry of Food.
“As a poet, as well as a recipe developer and cooking instructor, I am immersed in the worlds of creative writing and food, which naturally seem to feed each other,” said Young. “My goal is for participants to indulge their love of poetry and food while finding new ways to root their writing in sensory experiences. I hope that after the class they will bring a little creativity back to the kitchen.”
Attendees will delve into works that explore themes related to life, creativity, and nature through the food experience.
“Patrons will enjoy a chance to let food be their muse for creating amazing verse,” said Adam Volpe, adult services librarian. “Our patrons have always shown an interest in expressing their creativity. What better way than through poetry while enjoying delicious food and wonderful company.”
