First Baptist Church has a Rich History In 1898, non-denominational house meetings were held, leading to an organizational effort in 1904 to form the First Baptist Church of Kenilworth under the leadership of Reverend William Hawes.
On April 22, 1910, the church was incorporated under the Reverend William Hawes as the “founding pastor.” In 1914 Reverend J.E. Scott succeeded Reverend Hawes as pastor. Pastor Scott faithfully served for 42 years until his passing in 1956. Reverend Russell K. Williams succeeded Reverend Scott as pastor and served from 1956 to 1966. During his tenure, the land on which the church stands was purchased from the Borough of Kenilworth. Reverend Alexander Williams became the fourth pastor in April 1967. With the help of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey and Executive Minister, Reverend George Younger, funding was secured for building a church on 225 North 8th Street in Kenilworth. Under Pastor Williams’ leadership, the sanctuary was completed.
On Easter Sunday in 1972, Pastor Alexander Williams and the congregation marched from the Saint Paul AME Church in Kenilworth into the newly completed sanctuary singing, “We’ve Come This Far by Faith.” Pastor Alexander Williams went on to serve for thirty years retiring as Pastor Emeritus in December 1997. On January 11, 1998, Reverend Mildred Williams was ordained as the fifth Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Under Reverend Williams, the church renewed its commitment to community outreach and discipleship.
