January 2 @ 1 PM – Movie Matinee: “Barbie” (Adults)

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full‐on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken. Margot Robbie plays Barbie and Ryan Gosling plays Ken in this PG-13 fantasy adventure comedy.  This movie screening was made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library

January 4 @ 7:30 PM -9:30 PM – Board Games at the Brewery (Adults)

Buy yourself a beer and play a board game in the back room at Untied Brewing! Library volunteers Mark and Elizabeth will introduce you to board games that go beyond the usual suspects you grew up playing.  We’ll play easy, quick to learn games like Otrio, Ticket to Ride, Catan, Sushi Go, Mysterium, and King of Tokyo. Ages 21+. Meet at Untied Brewing at 140 Spring Street in New Providence.

January 4,11,18,25 @ 10:30 AM – Creative Writing Group (Adults & Teens)

Connect with your creative peers in the community with Creative Writing, a one hour opportunity to hone your writing skills. Each week, an optional writing prompt is provided, or you may write about anything you’d like. This is a fun, nonjudgmental way of expressing yourself. Please note, this is not a class. January 5, 12, 19, 26 @ 3:50-4:45PM – Math Club (Kids & Teens)

Join the NP Math Club and hone your problem-solving skills while meeting with other math enthusiasts. Meetings are held every Friday at the NP Library from 3:45-4:45PM. January 6, 13, 20, 27 @ 3-4:30PM – SAT Math Help Club (Teens)

Tutoring sessions for students who are looking for help with the math portion of the SAT. High School students will take a portion of a practice test and discuss the sections they need help with. Please bring a laptop/tablet and notebook. Run by a NP Teen. Email NPMLTeens@gmail.com to register.

January 8 @ 6:30 PM – 9 PM – Batter Up – Let’s Talk Baseball (All Ages)

January 8 @ 7 PM – 8 PM – Baseball’s Oddballs, Outcasts and Outliers (Adults)

Did Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell really have a fascination with fire engines? Why did the House of David barnstorming team never shave or cut their hair? Did Dock Ellis really throw a no-hitter while under the influence of LSD? And why did Turk Wendell brush his teeth in the dugout between innings? January 8, 22, 29 @ 4:30-6:30PM – NP Chess Club (Kids, Teens & Adults)

Learn to play chess from the NP Chess Club! Instructional Lectures & Strategy from 4:30-5:30 in the Conti Room, followed by play from 5:30-7:30. Open to kids, teens, and adults. January 9 @ 10:30 AM – 12 PM – Books & Bagels (Adults)

Finally, a book group with no assigned reading! Join us for a free bagel from NP Bagel Cafe & tell us about what you’ve been reading and which books you’ve enjoyed recently. January 10  @ 3:015 PM – 4:30 PM Snap Circuit Jr. Club (Kids)

The Snap Circuit Jr. Club is back for children 1st grade and up.  Learn about electronics, science, and engineering with mini experiments.  The club will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

January 11 @ 7:30 PM – Book Group (Adults)

The book group will discuss Hester by Laurie Lico Albanese, a fictional origin story to The Scarlet Letter that gives a female perspective to the classic novel. Albanese’s novel supposes that Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote his famous book based on an episode in his own life, with Hester Prynne modeled after a seamstress who immigrated to Salem.

January 12 @ 11 AM – 12 PM – Let’s Craft: Cupcake Decorating (Adults)

Love the fancy cupcakes you see at a bakery?  Come learn how to decorate buttercream cupcakes at home.  We will use piping bags and multiple tips to make creative cupcakes.  Take home your delicious works of art. January 13, 27  @ 10 AM – 3 PM CRAFTERDAY (Children)  

Come by the Coddington Room and use the materials and instructions that have been left out on the tables.  Take home what you create.  While supplies last!   This program is made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

January 13 @ 1:30 PM  – Screening of “Selma” Followed by a Discussion (Adults)

The Summit College Club and the New Providence Memorial Library co-host their annual film screening in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  “Selma” is a PG-13 docudrama depicting the marches from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery to secure voting rights for black Americans during the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. A discussion moderated by the SCC will follow.

January 14 @ 3 PM – Jay Daniels Piano/Vocal Concert (All Ages)

Pianist and vocalist Jay Daniels brings a fresh interpretation of classic songs popularized by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Patsy Cline, and others. Concerts are made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library. Everyone is welcome. 

January 16 @ 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM – Book Group (Adults)
The morning book group will discuss “Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals” a memoir by Laurie Zaleski. In 2001, Zaleski established the Funny Farm Animal Rescue outside Mays Landing, New Jersey to carry out her deceased mother’s dream of saving abused and neglected animals.

January 16 @ 1 PM – 4 PM – Movie Matinee: “Oppenheimer” (Adults)
During World War II, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb. Their work comes to fruition on July 16, 1945, as they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing the course of history. This movie screening was made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

January 17 @ 3:45 PM – 4:45 PM Teens Teaching: An Introduction to the Science of Slime (Children & Teens)

Come check out our newest series! Each month a High School junior or senior will lead a session to teach younger students about niche topics that may not be covered in school. January’s topic is the science of slime! A great opportunity for younger students to learn from high school upperclassmen in a fun setting. For students in grades 3-8. Join us in the Conti Room for the original movie adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book.

January 23 @ 1 PM – 2 PM – Cookbook Club (Adults)

Bring a cookbook or a recipe that you like to share with the group, or even cook and bring the dish itself if you’re feeling inspired. Join this string band for some toe tapping fun.  All music lovers welcomed!

January 24  @ 3:15 PM – 4:30 PM Lego Club (Kids)

Lego Club  will meet usually on the 4th Wednesday of each month!  Build a creation to fit the monthly theme or just make your own creation.  Themed creations will be on display in the children’s room until the following month.  

January 25 @ 3:00 PM – Sign up for February Teen Take Out Boxes (Teen)

Teen Take Out is a monthly box of fun for NP teens in grades 6-12 with a current NPML library card. Each month, we put together a box for you including fun treats like snacks, crafts, bookmarks, buttons, stickers, and more. Plus, we select a YA Fiction book for you based on your answers to our questionnaire! January 25 @ 7 PM – 8 PM – New Year: New Career (Adults)

Whether you are just getting started in your work life, are a mid-career professional looking for a change or enhancement, or are an adult returning to the job market after a time away, you are welcome to attend our career series on January 25, February 1, and February 15 at 7 PM. The first workshop, Getting Started, will cover self-reflection & research, skills inventory & gaps, and decoding job postings. Ken Cavanaugh is the former Director of Career Advising for Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, where he advised hundreds of graduate and undergraduate students.

January 27 @ 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Yoga & Mindfulness Class (Adults & Teens)

Kim Pallant will teach a yoga & mindfulness class for all levels to complete her yoga teacher training. Beginners are welcome. Please bring a mat and any other props you need to be comfortable to the Conti Room.  Email RSVP@newprovidencelibrary.org to register for this free class.
