June 1 – 21  – Sign up for Summer Reading Teen Volunteering! (Teens)

Summer Reading 2022 will kick off on June 26 and we need teen volunteers to help! Starting June 1, teens going into grades 8-12 next year can sign up to work 2-hour shifts inside the library at our Summer Reading table. Help people sign up, assist with online registration, and hand out prizes! Earn volunteer hours in the air-conditioned library! The link to the SignUp Genius will go live on June 1. June 1 @ 7 PM – Anat Shmulovich, Author of “Where the Night Train Ends” (Adults)

Pianist and New Providence resident Anat Shmlovich will discuss her memoir, “Where the Night Train Ends: How I Survived Ukraine, Russia, and the Loss of the Man I Loved” in conversation with fellow author Linda Raedisch.  Learn more about Anat’s childhood in Ukraine, her piano studies in Moscow, and her relationship with the Israeli politician and Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky. June 4 @ 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM  – Broadway Songbirds (Families, All Ages)

Performing Arts 5678’s Broadway Songbirds entertain with uplifting, fully choreographed music, perfect for all ages!  With solos from the Golden Age to Leiber and Stoller’s Smokey Joe’s Cafe, these Broadway-Bound powerhouses will bring to life music that will not only get your toes tappin’, but also touch your hearts with fun and inspirational showtunes. Conti Room This program was made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

Join us for bagels & a book group with no assigned reading!  Come and tell us about what you’ve been reading and which books you’ve enjoyed recently. June 7 – July 27 – Community Photography Show: “Travels and Explorations, Near and Far”(All Ages)

This year’s annual community art show’s theme is photography.  Travel photographs from New Providence residents are on exhibit on the walls of the quiet reading area and in the Conti Family Room.  This exhibit was curated by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

June 8 @ 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Book Group (Adults)

The book group will discuss “Solito” by Javier Zamora, the true story of Javier’s three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border – without his family, when he was only a child.  A memoir as gripping as it is moving, Solito not only provides an immediate and intimate account of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments. June 10 @ 10:30 AM – Paint Your Own Indian Tea Coasters (Adults)

Draw and paint a set of 2 wooden coasters with acrylic paint. Instructor Gunjan M. will teach you how to draw, then paint motifs from traditional Indian styles like Madhubani and Warli. You may also choose to paint an abstract design or a design of your own. This program was made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library. Registration is required. June 11, 12, 13, 14 – Teen Study Days

Come study for finals or take a well deserved break at the library. De-stress with board games or get some last minute studying done in space reserved just for you. No registration needed, drop in and out as needed.

June 12 @ 6:30 PM – 9 PM – Batter Up – Let’s Talk Baseball (All Ages)

Baseball enthusiasts are invited to discuss teams, players and issues of the sport with other baseball fans. Now in its ninth year, this group of mostly seniors welcomes all ages to join the discussion.  Email the library at rsvp@newprovidencelibrary.org to register.

June 13 @ 1 PM – 3 PM – Movie Matinee: “A Man Called Otto” (Adults)

Based on the comical and moving New York Times bestseller, A Man Called Otto tells the story of a grumpy widower played by Tom Hanks, whose only joy comes from criticizing and judging his exasperated neighbors. When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unexpected friendship that will turn his world upside-down. This PG-13 comedy/ drama was released in 2023. Movie screenings are made possible by support from the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

June 15 @ 2 PM – An American In Provence: Virtual Author Talk with Photographer Jamie Beck (Adults)

An American in Provence is a beautiful collection of exquisite portrait, scenic, and still-life photography from New York Times bestselling author and award-winning photographer Jamie Beck. Looking to slow down from her fast-paced life in New York City, Beck embarked on a one-year getaway to Provence. One year, turning into five, Beck moved to the French countryside, documenting her life as “An American in Provence.” Equal parts art book, travel diary, memoir, and cookbook, An American in Provence transports you to the South of France. The morning book group meets to discuss the memoir “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed” by Lori Gottlieb, a psychologist who explores five patients, including herself, and their viewpoints on life. June 21 at 10:30 AM – Good Tyme String Band (Kids & All Ages)  

Join this string band for some toe tapping fun.  All music lovers welcomed!

June 24 at 2 PM -3 PM – Jersey Jugglers (Kids & Families)

June 26 – August 11 – Summer Reading: Reach New Heights! (All Ages)

It’s here! Summer Reading 2023 begins on June 26 and will run through August 11. Register online via ReadSquared to track your reading progress, earn badges, complete missions, attend programs and earn prizes! We’ll have loads to do for Preschoolers, Kids in grades K-5, Teens in grades 6-12 and Adults ages 18+ who want to Reach New Heights with the Library!

June 27  @ 6:35 PM – 8:05 PM – Read to a Dog (1st – 4th Graders)

Are you a new or developing reader?  Practice your skills by reading to a therapy dog.  To register your 15 minute slot, please email NPMLChildrens@gmail.com.  

June 28 @ 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM – Lego Club (Kids)

Lego Club is back and will meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month!  Build a creation to fit the monthly theme or just free form.  Themed creations will be on display in the children’s room until the following month.  

June 28 @ 8 PM – Virtual Author Talk with Tananarive Due (Adults)

Please join us for a chat with Tananarive Due about her newest work, The Wishing Pool and Other Stories. The second collection of stories by the author is full of her signature offerings of horror, science fiction, and suspense while confronting monsters of all kinds, including racism, the monster within, and the supernatural. Due’s prolific body of work cements the author as a leading voice in black speculative fiction for more than 20 years.
