When schools moved to all remote learning in March of 2020, many annual school traditions were put on hold or missed altogether. The Mt. Horeb Parent Teacher Organization didn’t want last year’s first-grade students to miss out on the time-honored experience of chick hatching.

In early October, the students from Ms. Lindsay Rosenberg and Ms. Kathleen Haydu’s grade 2 classes carefully tended to 24 fertilized eggs while also learning about the lifecycle of a chick. The eggs take 21 days to hatch and they were delivered to Mt. Horeb School from Quiver Farms on day 17.

Students learned that the eggs had to be turned three times per day while also learning the importance of the temperature of the incubator.

On Monday, October 5 the students began to see small cracks in the eggs. After a few hours the feathery, yellow surprises were ready to hatch. Once the chicks were dry and fluffy, the students were able to hold them before placing them in the brooder boxes to feed and grow.
