FLORAL ARRANGING CLASSES  Learn to balance color while creating a beautiful centerpiece on Wed, Sept. 27th at 1 pm in the Community Room $5/person. All seniors will be provided a vase and fresh flowers. Florist Julie DeMarco owner of Millburn Florist and Mountainside resident will be the instructor. Come to make your own floral arrangement. Take the AARP Smart Driver classroom course and you could save money on your car insurance.  The course will be held at Borough Hall Rescue Squad Conf. Room 9:30 Wed, Oct 4th.  Refresh your driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road and learn techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way and roundabouts. WATERCOLOR CLASSES  Join us for a series of 12 instructional classes Friday’s starting Sept 15th  at 10:30 am in Community Room at Borough Hall.  Registration cost is $30 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Instructor KEN SCHWARZ will be leading the classes. He is a graduate of duCret School of Art, and has a career that spans over 45 years.  Forms to register can be obtained at the Municipal Building or on the website under Departments, Senior Services.  Make checks payable to Borough of Mountainside.  Call Kim Moriak at 908-232-4406 for more information.

SENIOR HEALTH AND FITNESS

PROJECT HEALTHY BONES CLASSES will be held on Wednesdays starting Sept 20th  and run through Dec 13th.  Classes begin at 10:00 AM.  his class is a high-intensity low-impact exercise program designed for men and women who have, or are at risk of developing osteoporosis.  The cost for the program is $15 for Mountainside residents and $72 for Non-residents.  Forms to register can be obtained at the Municipal Building or on the website under Departments, Senior Services.  Please call Kim Moriak at 908-232-4406 for more information. FIT AND HEALTHY CLASSES are held each Friday from 9 to 10 AM.  Classes will begin Sept 22nd  and run through Dec 15th.  Classes will continue to be offered FREE of charge.

BRAIN POWER EXERCISE CLASSES are being introduced as a new fall class held on Tuesdays 1 pm beginning Sept., 19th through Dec 12th  $5/person. There will be no class on Oct 10th.  This class focuses on the fundamental connection between physical health and mental health.  Each part of health directly impacts the other in both negative and positive ways.  The goal in Brain Power is to highlight the positive connections through a variety of activities that move the body and challenge the brain.  Forms to register can be obtained at the Municipal Building or on the website under Departments, Senior Services.  Please call Kim Moriak at 908-232-4406 for more information. CHAIR YOGA CLASSES are being introduced as a new fall class held on Thursdays 12 noon beginning Sept. 21st  through Dec 14th $5/person. 1 hour class. Free BLOOD PRESURE SCREENINGS are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the Municipal Building. No reservation is necessary.

SAGE ELDERCARE provides FREE planning and programs to help assist in providing for our frail, or at risk seniors who reside in Mountainside. This is possible due to a grant through the Watts Foundation. SENIOR SUPPER CLUB – NEW VITALITY MEMBERS

New Vitality is your source for healthy and wellness programs designed specifically for adults 65+ by your partners in fit living at Overlook Medical Center.  The membership includes FREE classes.  Summit Grill Cafeteria at Overlook Medical Center 4th floor is offering a great meal and an opportunity to socialize with other Seniors every THURSDAY, 4:30 to 6:30 pm, $5 for 3-course meal and Free parking in West Garage when you present your membership card (available at the Information Desk at Overlook Medical Center).

SENIOR CITIZEN HANDYMAN PROGRAM

This program is for Mountainside senior citizens 62 or over who own their home and need minor repairs such as replacement of fuses, batteries, fixtures and light bulbs, remove or place A/C units in windows, move patio furniture, light carpentry, repairs to railings, stairs, locks, door handles, and light painting.  It also includes, minor plumbing, such as replacement of washers, opening slow drains, leaking faucets, tub caulking, and more.  To participate, a short application must be completed, which can be found on the website under Departments, Senior Services or at Borough Hall.  All information is confidential.  For further information or to apply please call Kim Moriak at 908-232-4406.

SENIOR TRANSPORTATION NEWS   

Seniors 62 years or older may ride the senior van on Monday 9 AM- 2 PM, Tuesday and Thursday     9 AM- 2:30 PM.  No service will be provided on Wednesday’s or Friday’s.  We have 2 excellent and reliable drivers. Food shopping trips are available by appointment on Tuesday and Thursday mornings only.  Food shopping appointments must be made at least 1 day in advance.  Pick up for shopping will start between 9:30 and 10 AM.  All other appointments such as doctors, hair dressers, post office, library, etc. can be made Monday, Tuesday and/or Thursday starting at 9:30 AM.  These appointments must be made at least 2 days in advance.  To schedule a ride, please call 908-232-2400 Ext. #238.  Leave your name, telephone #, time of appointment, your address and the address of your destination.  If there are any questions or problems, please call Kim Moriak at 908-232-4406

Senior Club of Mountainside meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 12 noon at Community Presbyterian Church with refreshments. The meetings are going to begin on Sept. 8th and run through Dec. 8th   Join us to hear the “Happenings in Mountainside” with Mayor Mirabelli on Sept 8th  at the Hilton Garden Inn, 304 Route 22W, Springfield at 12 noon Breakfast Buffet.  RSVP to Eve Vitale 789-8568.  On Sept. 22nd enjoy lunch and learn about our new neighbors moving in – with Maria Owens from Arbor Terrace of Mountainside, the New Signature of senior living.  Oct 27th Sharon Morgan of Cranford Rehab & Nursing Center is going to explain what Sub-Acute 101 – what it is and what happens when you go into Sub-Acute.  A bus trip is planned for Nov 17th to Hunterdon Playhouse and stay tuned for information regarding the Christmas Party.  We are always looking for people who are interested in participating.  Dues are $12 for the year.  For more information about the club contact Eve Vitale at 789-8568.
