Mountainside Boy Scouts Step Up to Spruce Up

Submitted by Carol Goggi

Recently, scouts from Mountainside’s Boy Scout Troop 177 spent hours of hard work beautifying the area behind the Deacon Andrew Hetfield House along New Providence Road. The area had become full of unsightly weeds and needed attention. The Scout Leader, John Huss, reached out to Mountainside Restoration Committee member, Alice Cowell, who is also a volunteer with the Mountainside Beautiful group, asking if there was anything the scouts could do to earn some community service hours.

Alice knew exactly what needed to be done. She took the group over to the area around the red Hetfield and Levi Cory House, and Mountainside Library sign on New Providence Road and explained that weeds needed to be pulled and a good layer of mulch needed to be spread to deter new weed growth. The Mountainside DPW came through with a load of mulch and the boys got to work. Seven boys worked dozens of community service hours to complete the job. Scouts Keegan Healy, Jack Huss, Pat Huss, Garrett Jancourtz, Daniel Lopes, Kevin McCauley and Luke Zuzovsky worked on the project. The Mountainside Restoration Committee is most appreciative for this job well done.

The Mountainside Restoration Committee is a committee of volunteers whose purpose is to restore and maintain the Deacon Andrew Hetfield and Levi Cory Houses and collect and save historic information and items from destruction.
