Millburn Schools Red Ribbon Week 2022

Each year the Millburn Municipal Alliance Committee (MMAC) celebrates Red Ribbon Week in the Millburn Township Public Schools.

Red Ribbon Week is a nation-wide drug prevention campaign that was started in honor of DEA Agent Kiki Camarena who was killed in the line of duty. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated from October 23 – 31 and this year’s theme isCelebrate Life – Live Drug Free.

This year, Peer Leaders from Millburn Middle School met with the Friday Friends senior citizen group at the Bauer Center to help make the red ribbons that decorate all the schools across Millburn-Short Hills.

After working together to make hundreds of red ribbons, the students and seniors had an opportunity to have lunch together and make inter-generational connections. In addition to the red ribbons, the schools shared out messages in their morning announcements, students participated in an art contest and created posters and artwork celebrating the importance of living drug-free. The student’s artwork will be displayed in the Millburn Education Center.

Did you know that children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs and alcohol are 42% less likely to use drugs and alcohol than those who don’t, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations with their parents.  Help us spread the message of Red Ribbon Week by having an open dialogue with the young people in your life about the risks and dangers of drugs.
