Memo From The Mayor

Anthony DuLucaI hope everyone is having a great summer! Please keep in mind that with the beautiful weather, it means extra precautions should be taken, whether you’re driving, biking or walking. While I fully encourage children and adults alike to go out and get exercise, it seems there are a lot more people out chasing “Pikachu” with the Pokémon Go game. Please, keep yourself safe and be aware of your surroundings while playing. Regardless of how high the value of the target is, it’s not worth getting hurt.
On the topic of safety, FEMA has announced they have a smartphone app, (available on Google play or Apple) to learn about what you can do before, during and after severe weather emergencies. Remember, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. The latest storm, while not as severe as a hurricane, showed that our Borough is still at risk for flooding, downed wires, downed trees and branches. Our emergency services are second to none, but Mother Nature always seems to do one better. Rest assured we are going to do whatever possible to try and remedy the situation to the best of our ability. As always, thoughts and suggestions are always welcome, communication and working together as a community is the key during crisis events.
A big Thank You and Kudos to everyone who is doing their part to keep Kenilworth a great place to live and work! Especially those who volunteer even a small amount of time. Saying “it’s not my problem” is an excuse and a poor one at that, every little bit helps. The pride all of you Kenilworthians shows, keep up the good work!In closing and on a serious note, I’d like to give you a point to ponder….”What is the value of a life?” Can anyone put a monetary value on such a thing or is it immeasurable? Is the Orwellian principal “All animals are created equal, but some are more equaller than others” (From Animal Farm by George Orwell) the doctrine that exists today? Millions of people have sacrificed their very lives to ensure that the ideal of equality and freedom is preserved for the future of next generations. Even today, the struggle continues. We all exist on this planet, we all will die someday, no one gets out alive. I am proud to live in Kenilworth, because I believe as a borough we live as a community, for better or for worse. We argue, we fight, we forgive and we move on. Keep it going Kenilworth, and hopefully others will catch on for our children’s sake.God Bless you all and God Bless America
