Madison Junior School’s Operation PB&J

Submitted by Lou Caruso

Over the past year, Madison Junior School, Madison, New Jersey, has established a strong partnership with the community service nonprofit organization “Be the Change” from Kean University. The organization is rooted in social justice and equality and spends countless hours serving those in need in the local community. Dr. Norma Bowe, professor, and advisor to the group was the keynote speaker for the 2018 “Compassion Through Action” program at Madison Junior School.
This year, Madison Junior School was selected to be one of the 10 community partners from all over the state of New Jersey who participated in Operation PB&J. Nearly 100 students gathered after school on March 2, 2018, to make over 150 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The sandwiches were then donated to “Be the Change” for distribution at their 10-year anniversary of homelessness relief which took place statewide on March 3th.
Sandwiches from the 10 community partners, including Madison Junior School, were delivered to Kean University. These sandwiches were then distributed to people in need across the state of New Jersey and New York City. Some of the locations included Newark Penn Station, Paterson, Elizabeth, Camden, Trenton, New Brunswick, Jersey City, and NYC Penn Station.
