LWV Songs of the Suffragists
Lyrics of American Feminism from 1850 to 2020
Submitted by Susan Ferris Rights
The League of Women Voters Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit (LWVBHNPS), including members and our high school/college interns, has spent the last 2 years putting together a terrific read, Songs of the Suffragists: Lyrics of American Feminism from 1850 to 2020, as part of our fundraising for local student scholarship awards and celebration of the Centennial.
Citing more than 80 sources and including more than 40 images, Songs of the Suffragists: Lyrics of American Feminism from 1850 to 2020 narrates the history of American feminism from the 19th Century through the modern era. Each chapter includes an excerpt of song lyrics from the relevant period, along with a well-researched commentary regarding the song and the woman’s movement at that time.
The book is 66 pages long and provides an ideal foundation for book club programming around the centennial.
This book was started by LWVBHNPS interns in the spring of 2018 with the help of LWV members Pat Dolan and LWV President Susan Ferris Rights.
Songs of the Suffragists: Lyrics of American Feminism from 1850 to 2020 was then researched and drafted by the LWV-BHNPS’s stellar group of high school and college interns in both 2018 and 2019. Interns included: Bridget Bowen, Julia Haas, Stephanie Lioudis, and Elizabeth Moshkevich. Each brought their unique insight and perspective to the creation of this book.
Thanks to tremendous effort, LWV member Laura Engelhardt was able to work with all the interns, edit and create the final version that is now for sale on Amazon.
We owe special thanks to the Intellectual Property Law Clinic of Rutgers University, and in particular to Sabrina Bazelais, Vincent Delriccio and Jason Tarella, who provided us with copyright guidance and advice.
Please support the LWVBHNPS (lwv-bhnps.org) and enjoy reading the history of the suffragist movement behind the music of the time. This book is available for purchase on Amazon.
