Kelly Post VFW Celebrates 85th Year

The Michael A. Kelly Post 2433, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Union, recently celebrated its 85th anniversary on Sunday, April 2, 2017, with a luncheon at the Suburban Golf Club. Joining with the Post in the celebration was its Auxiliary whose 85th anniversary will occur in September.
Members and friends of the Post were greeted by Commander Leo Graf and Auxiliary President Alma Lauer. Also on hand for the festivities were Barbara and Ken Hagemann, State VFW Judge Advocate, and State Judge Adjutant respectively, and VFW District 5 Commander Bobby Jeans and his wife Lenore, as well as Past Commanders and current officers of the Kelly Post and Auxiliary.
Founded in April 1932, the Kelly Post is dedicated to the memory of Pvt. Michael A. Kelly who lost his life in the final days of World War I in the battle of the Argonne Forest. The plans for the Post home on High Street were developed during World War II and, after several years of community meetings and fund raising events, the project was completed and dedicated in 1948. During its 85-year history the organization has provided fellowship, supported hospitalized and needy veterans, sponsored community activities, and kept the public aware of the service our vets gave and continue to give to our country. It has consistently strived to follow its motto: “Honor the Dead by Helping the Living.”
The Post was subsequently honored by the Union Township Committee at its regular meeting on April 11, 2017 with a Proclamation commending its officers and members for their dedication and on-going support of veterans and the community at large. The Mayor and Committee members all joined in congratulating the organization for its 85 years of service.
