July Programs at the Mountainside Public Library

 

The Mountainside Public Library has scheduled the following programs for July. Please note that the library will be closed on Saturdays during July and August. We will also be closed on Wednesday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.
Summer Reading Programs at the Mountainside Public Library – Read a book and build our Community Book Chain by joining one of the library’s summer reading programs! This summer’s theme is “Libraries Rock” and if you feel left out because the kids get to have all of the summer reading fun, adults can join the inaugural Adult Summer Reading Club. Go to the library’s website (www.mountainsidelibrary.org) and register with Beanstack our new online logging program. As the summer progresses, continue logging in and track the books that have been read. There will be prizes for both kids and adults! Story times for July can be found on the library’s website (www.mountainsidelibrary.org/children). Summer Reading ends on August 29.

Tuesday Night Movies:
Wonder Wheel (2017) will be shown on July 3. On Coney Island in the 1950s, a lifeguard tells the story of a middle-aged carousel operator, his beleaguered wife, and the visitor who turns their lives upside-down (PG-13).

On July 10, we will be screening The Great Debaters (2007).
True story of Professor Melvin B. Tolson who formed a debate team at a small, African American college in the 1930s. The team went on to beat Harvard in the national debate championships (PG-13).

Last Flag Flying (2017) will be our offering on July 17.
Thirty years after they served together in Vietnam, a former Navy Corpsman Larry “Doc” Shepherd reunites with his old buddies, former Marines Sal Nealon and Reverend Richard Mueller, to bury his son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War (R).

On July 24, The Post (2017) will be presented.
A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country’s first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between the press and the government (PG-13).

Our last movie of the month, on July 31, will be Murder on the Orient Express (2017).
From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, “Murder on the Orient Express” tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone’s a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again (PG-13).

Brown Bag Academy:
Our popular Great Courses series, “How to Listen To and Understand Great Music,” will continue through July on Mondays at 1:15 p.m. Professor Robert Greenberg, Music Historian-in-Residence at the San Francisco Performances, is the lecturer. Learning how to appreciate the unmatched beauty, genius, and power of concert music can permanently enrich your life. The last lecture in this series will take place on August 6 at which time a new series will be selected. Bring your lunch! Coffee, tea and cookies will be served.

“Aging Services Kiosk” Friday, July 6 at 11:00 a.m.
Donna Farrell of The Union County Department of Human Services Division on Aging & Disability Resource Connection will be at the library again to provide information about home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care, support services for caregivers and more.

Career Networking Group, Monday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.
“In Transition – Now What Do I Do?” Being in transition for a short or long period can be very stressful. You can get depressed, angry and confused. You can lose your self-confidence. What can you do to change this situation? How do you get back into the game? How do you change this negative situation into a positive experience? Join Marty Latman as he discusses a topic all people in transition struggle with.  Attendees at all levels will learn about the obstacles they need to overcome, the methods they need to use to change their situation and ways to make being in transition a productive, meaningful and positive time in their lives.

“Djembe-African Drum Circle”, Thursday, July 12 at 4:00 p.m.
LearnListenPlay Mobile Music Education will be at the library to present a Djembe-African Drum Circle. Children ages 3-8 and their caregivers will dance, sing, learn about African drumming and play an authentic African djembe.

“Juggling Rocks”, Thursday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m.
The Juggling Hoffman’s Show will present an interactive juggling show for all ages which includes balloon sculptures and face painting.

“Sort Your Stuff This Summer”, Thursday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m.
Local humorist Jamie Novak returns to the library for another laugh-out-loud funny look at the common challenges to getting organized. Her motto is “helping you clear clutter – one laugh at a time”! Learn a few simple organizing tricks for key areas of your home and life during this workshop. Jamie Novak is the author of multiple bestsellers including Keep This Toss That. If you could use more time and less stress, you won’t want to miss this event!

“Bubble Trouble”, Tuesday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m.
Jeff Boyer will present his interactive Bubble Trouble program for children of all ages. Jeff takes bubbles to the max in this one-man bubble extravaganza. He juggles bubbles, sculpts and builds with bubbles and more!
