Prakash Masurekar Receives The Canright Award

Submitted by Iris D Alston

Friends of the Warren Township Library held their first meeting of the fall season to honor Prakash Masurekar with the annual Canright Award. The award ceremony was held on October 14, 2019 in the Warren Twp Library meeting room and was followed by a Friends reception with light refreshments. Friends President Donna Java presented the $250 check award to Mr. Masurekar.

Mr. Masurekar is a longtime resident of Warren Twp and has been a member of the Friends since 1958. He was inspirational in raising funds to build the current facility that houses the Warren Twp Library which was once located in an old carriage house donated to the town by a Warren Twp resident. He also organized one of the Friends first book drives to donate books collected to libraries, schools, hospitals and refugee camps in rural communities around the world. Mr. Masurekar continues to volunteer with the Friends and remains committed to its mission of fostering lifelong learning and reading for enjoyment.

The Canright Award was established by Betty Lou Canright, a long time resident of Warren Twp, as part of her legacy. She wanted to honor Friends members who dedicate their time to volunteering and raising funds to support the library. Betty Lou’s son Mark Canright and his daughter Rebecca attended the awards ceremony. Mr. Canright, who owns and operates an organic farm in Hunterdon County, presented Mr. Masurekar with a bounty of fresh vegetables from his fall harvest, including bok choy, white turnips, radishes, kale, homemade preserves and a generous supply of Scotch Bonnet peppers. Mark and Rebecca also brought a generous supply of their harvest to share with all of the Friends members and library staff present at the ceremony.

The Friends of the Warren Twp Library is a non profit volunteer organization that supports the library. If you would like to join the Friends please stop by the branch or mail your $20 donation with checks payable to: The Friends of the Warren Twp. Library, 42 Mountain Boulevard Warren, NJ 07059.
