Winter Reading Challenge at the Mountainside Public Library. Our Summer Reading Program was such a success that we are now doing a Winter Reading Challenge. Like Summer reading, this program is open to adults as well as children ages 8 and up! And, there will be prizes! We will have weekly book and hockey-related giveaways. The Grand Prize will be 2 tickets to the New Jersey Devils vs. Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Prudential Center. Log into Beanstack from our website (mountainsidelibrary.org) to participate in our 12 different winter reading activities. After each activity is completed, you will receive a raffle ticket for our weekly raffles. After completing 4 activities, you will receive a raffle ticket for the Grand Prize. Stop in to the library and browse our catalog for a good book and you just might win a prize! Thanks to the New Jersey Devils for promoting reading in our community! The Winter Reading Challenge ends on February 28.
Tuesday Night Movies. RBG (2018, PG)
is our movie to be shown on February 5.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has developed a breathtaking legal legacy while becoming an unexpected pop culture icon. RBG is a revelatory documentary exploring Ginsburg’s exceptional life and career leading to her rise to the nation’s highest court.
On February 12, our film is Crazy Rich Asians (2018, PG-13).
Follow native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention to her a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors.
Love, Simon (2018, PG-13) will be shown on February 19.
Seventeen-year old Simon Spier has yet to tell his family or friends he’s gay and he doesn’t actually know the identity of the anonymous classmate he’s fallen for online. Resolving both issues proves hilarious, terrifying and life-changing. Love, Simon is a funny and heartfelt coming-of-age story about the thrilling ride of finding yourself and falling in love.
On February 26, we will screen The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2014, PG).
One of Japan’s most famous folk tales is made into an animated, hand-drawn masterwork. Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter and his wife, a tiny girl grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady. The mysterious young princess enthralls all who encounter her, but ultimately she must confront her fate, the punishment for her crime.
Showtime is 6:30 p.m. for each movie except on February 26 when the movie will state at 6:00 p.m. due to its length.

“Pipsqueak Players- Reading Reimagined,”
Friday, February 1 and Thursday, February 7 at 3:45 p.m.
The popular Pipsqueak Players duo of Cheryl Isbirian and Erin Kraven will continue their programming from last month with the last two workshops in this series. This is a reading enrichment program that nurtures enjoyment and comprehension in a workshop style setting. Classes are designed for 5-7 year olds. Preregistration is required.
“Opera on Film Series,”
Friday, February 8 at 1:00 p.m.
Friday Operas on Film Series is presented by Mena Clemson. This month, a 2017 recording of Otello by Giuseppe Verdi starring Jonas Kaufmann (Otello), Marco Vratogna (Iago) and Maria Agresta (Desdemona) will be shown. The Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House are conducted by Antonio Pappano.
“Come Read to Kalee,”
Friday, February 8 at 3:45 p.m.
Come cuddle up and read for 5-10 minutes to Kalee, Mountainside’s favorite therapy dog. Please bring two favorite books with you to read when you come. This program is especially designed for emergent and beginning readers in Grades K-1. You must reserve a spot for this program. Kalee will be with us monthly through June.
“The Magic Conductor’s Reading Adventures: The Dining Car Mystery,”

Author and Family Entertainer Steve Woyce created “The Magic Conductor’s Reading Adventures” to get children ages 4-10 and their families excited about reading. This interactive and engaging program combines Theatre, Storytelling, Comedy, Audience Participation, and Magic to spark curiosity and gets the entire audience involved in helping to solve a mystery. The audience will become Junior Train Engineers as they help Steve search for clues to solve a mystery in this train-themed program designed to get children excited about reading! Everything aboard the Dining Car from spoons to a pitcher of milk will help the
audience get one step closer to solving the mystery of what happens when you can’t get your head into a good book! Call to register.
