Adding to her growing list of accolades, St. Joseph’s College sophomore Deserae Sequeira, a graduate of Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark, has been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Women’s Soccer Team, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Sequeira becomes the first Bear in women’s soccer program history and the fifth SJC student-athlete in any sport to receive the honor.
“Deserae continues to set new standards for our program, and with the help of her teammates, is becoming a more complete player in our conference and region. She should be known for more than just a leading goal scorer. She’s a driven student-athlete with a wonderful family behind her,” commented Head Women’s Soccer Coach Gary Lawson.
In November, the three-time Skyline Player of the Week received her second All-Skyline Conference First Team selection tallying 16 goals with 10 assists to solidify her as one of the most prolific forwards in the conference, ranked third in goals and assists and second in points. Her league-leading five game-winning goals helped the Bears to their best finish in Skyline Conference play in fifth place with a 5-4 league record and their second-straight Skyline Championship appearance.
In just two seasons, Sequeira already is the program leader in total points (99) and needs just five goals to become the leader in goals scored, currently with 39.
“As a freshman, Deserae joined our program with clear goals about building something special at St. Joseph’s and leaving a legacy for future Bears to follow. Now after completing her sophomore soccer season, it is obvious that Deserae is special student-athlete and if she stays determined and driven over the next two years and beyond can achieve anything she puts her mind to. It is an honor to be her coach,” concluded Lawson.
Off the field, Sequeira has maintained a 3.81 GPA as a multi-sport student-athlete also playing on the women’s basketball team, which opens their season today.
“Deserae is a tremendous competitor and pushes herself to succeed athletically and academically each semester,” added Director of Athletics and Recreation James Lally. “We are very proud of the way she represents SJC Brooklyn and congratulate her on this outstanding recognition.”
