Ann McGovern, a Cranford resident and retired Cranford middle school teacher, took up crocheting as a way to learn anew skill and express her creativity.

When the sitting Bernie Sanders memes took over the internet after the inauguration, Ann decided to put her skills to the test. Eleven hours later she created her version of “Sitting Bernie”.

Her creation revived so much interest on Facebook, she decided to reach out to Cranford, NJ Moms Facebook group and ask if they would partner with her to raise money for Cranford Family Cares and give her crocheted Bernie doll away.

Her idea was to ask for a donation of $5 as an entry fee for a chance to win the doll. 430 donations later and $2,150 raised for Cranford Family Cares, Bernie found a new home with lucky winner, Cranford mom, Rachael Zeigler.
