If you wanted to take a trip around the world, but you only had several hours to spare, the Girl Scouts of Cranford had a solution at their recent World Thinking Day event. Twenty-three troops spanning age groups from Daisies to Seniors gathered at the Cranford Community Center on Sunday, March 1 to celebrate the cultures of 20 different countries. The center was full of curious girls learning about ethnic foods, traditions, clothing, dance, language, economies and more.

Each Girl Scout received a paper passport at the start of the event and had it stamped when she visited each of the displays, which were each created by a troop. Later there were performances of folk dances from twelve troops. Daisy Troop 40042 wore traditional white Ethopian dresses for their performance and Junior Troop 40866 wore plaid dresses or dressed as wooly sheep for their celebration of Ireland.

“I liked to see all the different countries and taste the foods from that culture and see the traditional skits,” said Giordana Valente of Brownie Troop 40794. Her troop researched France and wore berets and red scarves to help bring a bit of Parisian style to the event.

World Thinking Day is an international event celebrated in more than 150 countries. Begun in 1926, the official day is February 22. It is designed to celebrate the diversity, equity and inclusion of the global Girl Scout movement.

“This is such a fun event that brings us together as a Girl Scouts of Cranford community,” said Elayna Torsone, Service Unit Manager of Service Unit 48. “We had more than 245 Girl Scouts together celebrating all the beautiful ways our cultures are different as well as the commonalities that connect us. The displays showed how hard the girls worked to learn about their country and bring it to life for their sister scouts.”

The Girl Scouts of Cranford boasts over 1,139 Girl Scout Members in 71 troops and Juliette’s making it one of the largest non-profit organizations in town. The Cranford Service Unit is a part of the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) Council which is part of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
