Mary Leonard, NJ State DAR Constitution Week chairwoman, collected books appropriate for the grammar school level at a recent DAR Fall Conference held in Princeton, NJ on September 16th. These books were donated to St. Michael’s School in Cranford, NJ. Mrs. Sandy Miragliotta, Principal, graciously accepted the books on behalf of her students and teachers. Mrs. Miragliotta mentioned that during the week of Sept. 17 to the 23 she has been sharing stories about the US Constitution with the students during morning announcements.
Constitution Week is celebrated every year from September 17th to the 23rd. The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955 the NSDAR petitioned Congress to set aside a week in September to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. A resolution was later adopted by the US Congress and signed into public law on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower.
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, historic preservation, and education via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives. Constitution Week is celebrated across our nation with support from approximately 3,000 DAR local chapters.
